In Ms. E’s case, she denies any use of illicit substances and now only rarely drinks alcohol. She has no evidence of primary sleep or sexual disorders. Some recurrent suicide attempts are learned repetitive behaviors that have qualities of an acquired drive. Although Ms. E’s overdose is an isolated behavior, it is an act with the apparent goal of avoiding telling her partner the truth about her job loss and financial difficulties. This perspective does not account for the origin of the distress that precipitated the overdose. An overdose is a behavior, however, and therefore the behavior perspective is applicable to this aspect of the case. Why Ms. E did what she did (as opposed to doing something else, like asking for help)—the choice she made—is relevant to the formulation of her case, even though the origin of her presentation cannot be fully explained by the behavioral perspective.
